General Hawaiian Trivia

Hawaii is the newest if the 50 US States and is the only US state made up entirley of islands. It occupies most of an archipelago in the central area of the Pacific Ocean and comprises hundreds of islands spread over 1,500 miles (2,400 km). At the southeastern end of the archipelago are the eight Hawaiian "main islands", with the 3 largest being Hawaii meaning "the large island", Maui and Oahu. Hawaii has many beautiful beaches, with the most well known being Waikiki, Lanikai, Hanalei and Kaanapali.

Hawaii’s natural beauty, warm tropical climate, inviting waters and waves, and active volcanoes make it a popular destination for holidaymakers, tourists, surfers and biologists. Being a very active volcanic area it is also popular with  volcanologists. Due to its mid-Pacific location, Hawaii has many North American and Asian influences along with its own vibrant native culture.

Often associated with Hawaii is a Luau, meaning Hawaiian Feast. A Luau may feature food, such as poi, kalua, pig, poke, lomi salmon, opihi, haupia and beer. Often accompanied with entertainment, such as Hawaiian music and hula. Among people from Hawaii, the concepts of luau and party are often blended, resulting in Brithday Luaus, graduation luaus, wedding luaus etc.

Traditional dress such as floral shirts and Lei are worn. Lei is the Hawaiian word for garland or wreath. More loosely defined, a lei is any series of items strung together with the intent to be worn around the neck. The most popular lei in Hawaiian culture is a garland flowers draped around the neck, often presented upon arriving or leaving as a symbol of affection. This concept has been made popular through tourism between the Hawaiian Islands and the United States, although is now common with all visitors. Being floral in nature, the colours of Lei are often vibrant with pink, red, lilac, purple and blue flowers used with green foliage as an addition.

Hula is a form of Hawaiian dance and is often accompanied by a chant or song. It was originally developed by the Polynesians who settled in Hawaii and is a dance that portrays the words of the song or chant in visual dance form. Through western influence, hula is often accompanied by musical instruments such as the guitar or the ʻukulele.

Original traditional female dancers often wore Costumes that were a little more wore revealing, such as the pāʻū, or wrapped skirt, but were topless. Today this form of dress has been altered, now resulting in longer hula skirts and floral designed upper body wear. Dancers might also wear decorations such as necklaces, bracelets, and anklets, as well as many lei, necklaces, headpieces, bracelets, and anklets

Hawaiian shirts which are traditionally called the Aloha Shirt is a style of dress shirt originating in Hawaii. The shirts are printed, mostly short-sleeved, and collared. They usually have buttons, sometimes as a complete button-down shirt and occasionally just down to the chest. Aloha shirts usually have a left chest pocket. Hawaiian Aloha shirts may be worn by men or women, although women's shirts usually have a lower-cut V-style. The lower hem is straight, as the shirts are not meant to be tucked in. Aloha shirts are often brilliantly coloured with floral patterns or generic Polynesian designs and are worn as casual, informal wear.
